Online Presentation with Prezi

Actually, I missed class the day Dr. Yuen gave a lecture on Prezi. Therefore, I had to learn about Prezi by reading and using the provided online media. I found all the resources provided on the class website to be very useful, and I also found Prezi to be easy to use. As I understand it, Prezi.com is a Web 2.0 application for creating online presentations. Currently Prezi.com allows up to 10 users to collaborate on the same project. I believe Prezi is a very powerful, useful, and innovative tool for presentation since users can embed the video, upload picture, create their own path of presentation direction, can play both online or computer (through the download file), and more. In other words, Prezi makes fancy presentation. In fact, I consider Prezi could be used as marketing tool for businesses.

For this assignment, we were required to use Prezi to create an online presentation. Dr. Yuen specified that our Prezi presentation must consist of at least 12 slides with images and a YouTube video. He also wanted us to embed our Prezi presentation  (Width and Height as 440 x 320) to our class online social networking site. Unlike other class assignments, I did not spend much time pondering what I should do for this assignment. I decided to use Prezi to create a presentation for the 2010 International Textile and Apparel Association conference. The title of my presentation is “A Pilot Investigation of Fashion Merchandising Student Perception and Desire to Utilize Web 2.0 Tools and Educational Technologies in the Classroom.” Dr. Yuen commented that my presentation title was a little too long.

So far, my experience with Prezi has been positive. It was not difficult at all to create this presentation through Prezi; however, finding the right video to hook the audience is quite challenging. I did not realize that many YouTube videos about educational technology are geared toward K-12 grade. There are some videos for college level but not what I was looking for. I also found out that I couldn’t upload word or PowerPoint document straight to Prezi. They have to be converted to pdf or image file before uploading to Prezi. In my perspective, if there were a feature for users to record their voice or upload the audio for their presentation Prezi would become a powerful tool to enhance businesses in terms of advertising, marketing, and educating target audience.

It took me quite sometime to be satisfied with my first Prezi presentation. Although I received “A” for my Prezi project, there are rooms for improvement. I could use more pictures or images in my presentation when discussing about each Web 2.0 application or educational technology since picture worth more than a thousand words. I could shorten many sentences in my presentation. I also can use keywords.

Actually, Fashion Merchandising (FM) Program has been utilized Prezi to create a presentation for recruitment purpose since the earlier of this fall semester. My colleague, Brigitte Burgess, created this presentation. Every semester, FM faculty will be invited to present the program to first-year College of Business students in BA 250 class. The same presentation is also used for Black and Gold day for high school recruitment. Actually, Brigitte would like to use Prezi instead of PowerPoint for class lecture. The only drawback that I foresee is time to create and to update Prezi. As I stated previously, Prezi has a potential for marketing tools. In future semester, I have a plan for students to use Prezi for project and product presentation. Here under are useful YouTube video I watched from IT 644 class or found by myself.

  1. Everything looks so neat. You've really impressed me with the way you have used Jing to do the screen captures and even video.
